The NEC Spinwriter 5515 was a step up in printing during the early 1980s. It utilizes a thimble to make over 30 million impressions at a speed of 15 to 20 characters per second. A thimble is basically a metal daisy wheel with all of the characters and symbols (the petals) bent upwards to form a cup that would rotate. In addition, the ribbons for the NEC Spinwriter come inside of a cartridge for stain free removal and replacement. This printer was a receive-only printer with an auto feed friction feed platen, copy control, and impression control that prints 6-8 lines per inch.
