The Enigma cypher machine was used by the Germans to encrypt (and decrypt) military messages. The original machine was patented by Arthur Scherbius in 1918, the German military started using various versions in 1926.
This modern replica emulates the M4 model that was used by the German navy beginning in 1942.
Mr. BJ Gleason was a Kickstarter backer of the Open Enigma. He went on to write the manual for the unit.
This unit was acquired from his widow.
