Waiting for PCx86 to load
Apple Writer was written by Paul Lutus and published in 1979 by Apple Computer as a word processor for the Apple II family of computers. The original version supported 40-column text display; all text was displayed in uppercase, but lowercase could be toggled with the ESC key. Apple Writer did not display formatting on screen, but it would appear when the document was printed; it was specified with dot-commands, each requiring its own line.
Compute!'s 1980 review claimed that the review was written with Apple Writer and that "I have looked at other text editors for the Apple, some of which were overloaded with features. Given the hardware limitations of the Apple II, I feel that Apple Writer is a very useful document creation tool." In 1985, II Computing ranked Apple Writer as third to the top Apple II software, based on sales and market-share data.
